The deuteron is a loosely bound system which can easily break up into its constituent proton and neutron whilst in the presence of Coulomb and nuclear fields. Previous experimental studies have shown that this breakup process has a significant impact on residual nucleus production from deuteron bombardment in the high energy range of 50 - 210 MeV/nucleon. However, there remains a lack of cross-section data at energies below 50 MeV/nucleon. The current study determined $$^{93}$$Zr + d reaction cross sections under inverse kinematics at approximately 28 MeV/nucleon using the BigRIPS separator, OEDO beamline, and SHARAQ spectrometer. Cross sections from this research were compared with previous measurements and theoretical calculations. The experimental results show a large enhancement of the production cross sections of residual nuclei, especially those produced from a small number of particle emissions, compared to the proton-induced reaction data at similar bombarding energy. The DEURACS calculation, which quantitatively takes deuteron-breakup effects into account, reproduces the data well. As a long-lived fission product, $$^{93}$$Zr remains a challenge for nuclear waste disposal and treatment. This study's low-energy data may assist future consideration of nuclear-waste treatment facilities, where $$^{93}$$Zr + d may feasibly transmute the waste into short-lived/stable nuclei.

Continuous data assimilation of large eddy simulation by lattice Boltzmann method and local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LBM-LETKF)

We investigate the applicability of the data assimilation (DA) to large eddy simulations (LESs) based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). We carry out the observing system simulation experiment of a two-dimensional (2D) forced isotropic turbulence, and examine the DA accuracy of the nudging and the local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF) with spatially sparse and noisy observation data of flow fields. The advantage of the LETKF is that it does not require computing spatial interpolation and/or an inverse problem between the macroscopic variables (the density and the pressure) and the velocity distribution function of the LBM, while the nudging introduces additional models for them. The numerical experiments with $$256times256$$ grids and 10% observation noise in the velocity showed that the root mean square error of the velocity in the LETKF with $$8times 8$$ observation points ($$sim 0.1%$$ of the total grids) and 64 ensemble members becomes smaller than the observation noise, while the nudging requires an order of magnitude larger number of observation points to achieve the same accuracy. Another advantage of the LETKF is that it well keeps the amplitude of the energy spectrum, while only the phase error becomes larger with more sparse observation. From these results, it was shown that the LETKF enables robust and accurate DA for the 2D LBM with sparse and noisy observation data.

Challenge to charge exchange with pure carbon foil in the J-PARC 3GeV synchrotron

In the J-PARC 3GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS), the 400MeV H$$^{-}$$ beam is changed to H+ beam by a charge exchange foil and accelerated to 3GeV. So far, RCS had used two types of charge exchange foil. One is the HBC (Hybrid Boron mixed Carbon) foil and the other is the Kaneka GTF (Graphene Thin Film). HBC foil is a patented deposition method developed at KEK for the stable production of thick carbon foil. Initially, the RCS used HBC foil produced atKEK. However, in 2017, JAEA had started HBC foil production and has been using it since then. Recently, we have succeeded in depositing thick pure carbon foil, which had been considered difficult to produce by the arc deposition method. As a new challenge, this pure carbon foil was used in the user operation from March 2023. As a result, Pure carbon foils showed less deformation and more stable charge exchange performance than HBC and GTF.

Effect of decay heat on pyrochemical reprocessing of minor actinide transmutation nitride fuels

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has chosen nitride fuel as the first candidate for the transmutation of long-lived minor actinides (MA) using accelerator-driven systems (ADS). The pyrochemical method has been considered for reprocessing spent MA nitride fuels, because their decay heat should be very large for aqueous reprocessing. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of decay heat on the pyrochemical reprocessing of MA nitride fuels. On the basis of the estimated decay heats and the temperature limits of the materials that are to be handled in pyrochemical reprocessing, quantities adequate for handling in argon gas atmosphere were evaluated. From these considerations, we proposed that an electrorefiner with a diameter of 26 cm comprising 12 cadmium (Cd) cathodes with a diameter of 4 cm is suitable. On the basis of the size of the electrorefiner, the number necessary to reprocess spent MA fuels from 1 ADS in 200 days was evaluated to be 25. Furthermore, the amount of Cd-actinides (An) alloy to produce An nitrides by the nitridation-distillation combined reaction process was proposed to be about one-quarter that of Cd-An cathode material. The evaluated sizes and required numbers of equipment support the feasibility of pyrochemical reprocessing for MA nitride fuels.

Development of freezed seal valve by using test stand for LBE technology

In the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) being studied by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) for transmutation of long-lived radioactive waste, lead-bismuth eutectic alloy (LBE) is used as a spallation target and subcritical core coolant. A proton irradiation facility in J-PARC is considered to prepare a material irradiation database for ADS development. The proton irradiation facility is equipped with an LBE loop, which enables material irradiation tests in spallation environment under flowing LBE condition. The slow leakage of LBE is one of critical issue to use LBE safety. The slow leakage is caused by the biting slag and/or other materials at valve seal of drain valve. To solve this problem, JAEA examined the application of freeze-seal valve (FSV), which seal the piping by freezing LBE in specific position. Water-cooled and air-cooled freeze-seal valve test modules were fabricated, installed in the test section of the existing test stand for LBE technology development, and tested to confirm their operation and performance. As a result of the tests, it was confirmed that the water-cooled FSV test module worked well along to the design values. This report describes the outline and details of the test stand for LBE technology and each FSV test module, as well as the results of operation and performance verification tests.

This report summarizes the current status and future plans of research and development (R&D) on partitioning and transmutation technology in Japan Atomic Energy Agency, focusing on the results during the 3rd Medium- to Long-term Plan period (FY 2015-2021). Regarding the partitioning technology, R&D of the solvent extraction method and the extraction chromatography method are described, and regarding the minor actinide containing fuel technology, R&D of the oxide fuel production using the simplified pellet method, the nitride fuel production using the external gelation method, and pyrochemical reprocessing of the nitride fuel were summarized. Regarding transmutation technology, R&D of technology using fast reactors and accelerator drive systems were summarized. Finally, the new facilities necessary for the future R&D were mentioned.

Formation of MPd$$_{3+x}$$ (M = Gd, Np) by the reaction of MN with Pd and chlorination of MPd$$_{3+x}$$ using cadmium chloride

The formation of MPd$$_{3+x}$$ (M = Gd, Np) by the reaction of MN with Pd at 1323 K in Ar gas flow was observed. Cubic AuCu$$_3$$-type GdPd$$_{3.3}$$ (${it a}$ = 0.4081 $$pm$$ 0.0001 nm) and NpPd$$_3$$ (${it a}$ = 0.4081 $$pm$$ 0.0001 nm) were identified, respectively. The product obtained from the reaction of NpN with Pd contained additional phases including the hexagonal TiNi$$_3$$-type NpPd$$_3$$. Chlorination of the MPd$$_{3+x}$$ (M = Gd, Np) samples was accomplished by the solid-state reaction using cadmium chloride at 673 K in a dynamic vacuum. Pd-rich solid solution phase saturated with Cd and an intermetallic compound PdCd were obtained as by-products of MCl$$_3$$ formation.

Recent usage status of charge-exchange stripper foil for 3GeV synchrotron of J-PARC

In the J-PARC 3-GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS), a 400 MeV H- beam injected from the linac is exchange to an H+ beam by a charge exchange foil and accelerated to 3 GeV. The charge exchange foils mainly used in the RCS are HBC foil (Hybrid Boron mixed Carbon stripper foil), which are made by adding a small amount of boron to carbon rods and using them as electrodes by the arc deposition method. Since 2018, foils produced by JAEA have been used for user operation. So far, no major problems have occurred due to the foils. Meanwhile, the beam power of the RCS has been gradually increased from 500 kW to 830 kW since 2018. As beam power increases, the foil issues were identified to achieve the RCS design power of 1 MW. In this paper, we will report on the recent foil usage status and issue in the user operation.

Extraction properties of trivalent rare earth ions from nitric acid using a triamide-amine extractant

The extraction of trivalent rare earth ions (RE$$^{3+}$$) from HNO$$_{3}$$ solution using a triamide amine, tris(N,N-di-2-ethylhexyl-ethylamide)amine (DEHTAA), was conducted, and the extraction mechanism was estimated from extraction behavior of HNO$$_{3}$$ and RE$$^{3+}$$ and the relationship between atomic number and extraction percentages (E%) for RE$$^{3+}$$. A DEHTAA molecule dominantly formed a DEHTAA HNO$$_{3}$$ at 1.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$ and a DEHTAA(HNO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$ at 6.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$ in the acid-equilibrated organic phase. This would provide the unique dependence of E% for the light RE$$^{3+}$$ on the HNO$$_{3}$$ concentration, in which the E% value had a minimum and maximum at $$sim$$0.5 M and $$sim$$2 M HNO$$_{3}$$, respectively. The results of the slope analyses for the distribution ratios for RE$$^{3+}$$ suggested that the dominant RE$$^{3+}$$ complex was RE(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{3}$$DEHTAA(DEHTAA HNO$$_{3}$$) at 1.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$. The E% for RE$$^{3+}$$ decreased from La$$^{3+}$$ to Lu$$^{3+}$$ at 1.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$; on the other hand, those increased from La$$^{3+}$$ to Nd$$^{3+}$$ at 0.25 M and from La$$^{3+}$$ to Sm$$^{3+}$$ and 6.0 M HNO$$_{3}$$.

Data assimilation of three-dimensional turbulent flow using lattice Boltzmann method and local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LBM-LETKF)

This study implemented and tested the ensemble data assimilation (DA) of turbulent flows using the lattice Boltzmann method and the local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LBM-LETKF). The computational code was implemented fully on GPUs. The test was carried out for the 3D turbulent flow around a square cylinder with $$2.3times10^{7}$$ meshes and 32 ensemble members using 32 GPUs. The time interval of the DA in the test was a half of the period of the Kalman vortex shedding. The normalized mean absolute errors (NMAE) of the lift coefficient were 132%, 148%, and 13.2% for the non-DA case, the nudging case (a simpler DA algorithm), and the LETKF case, respectively. It was found that the LETKF achieved good DA accuracy even though the observation was not frequent enough for the small scale turbulence, while the nudging showed systematic delays in its solution, and could not keep the DA accurately.

Calculation of deuteron-induced reaction cross-sections for nuclear transmutation of long-lived fission products

Long-lived fission products (LLFPs) generated in nuclear reactors are strongly desired to be converted to stable or short-lived nuclides. Recently, it has been considered to transmute LLFPs by spallation reactions with high energy particles, and some experimental studies revealed that spallation reaction cross-sections induced by deuteron are larger than proton-induced ones. These results suggest the possibility that nuclear transmutation of LLFPs using deuteron beams is more efficient than one using proton beams. On the other hand, we have been developing a code system dedicated for deuteron-induced reactions, called DEURACS. DEURACS has been originally developed to contribute to the design of deuteron accelerator neutron sources. In the present study, we apply DEURACS to calculation of deuteron-induced spallation reactions on LLFPs. Through comparison with measured data, the applicability of DEURACS will be discussed.

We developed GPU implementation of ensemble data assimilation (DA) using the local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF) with the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The performance test was carried out upto 32 ensembles of two-dimensional isotropic turbulence simulations using the D2Q9 LBM. The computational cost of the LETKF was less than or nearly equal to that of the LBM upto eight ensembles, while the former exceeded the latter at larger ensembles. At 32 ensembles, their computational costs per cycle were respectively 28.3 msec and 5.39 msec. These results suggested that further speedup of the LETKF is needed for practical 3D LBM simulations.

Development of proton beam control technology for transmutation characteristic test

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has designed a Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P) as an experimental facility in the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The TEF-P is a critical assembly driven by a low-power proton beam, a maximum of 10 W, which is extracted from a high-power beam source, such as 250 kW of 400 MeV proton beam of the J-PARC Linac. To extract such a low-power proton beam from the high-power proton beam, we developed a laser charge exchange (LCE) device and employed its technique, which is one of the non-contact beam extraction techniques. For the proof of performance of the LCE device to the TEF-P, a low-power proton beam was extracted using a negative-hydrogen Linac having an energy of 3 MeV, and a bright laser. This paper summarizes the experimental results.

Toxicity reduction with total volume control in nuclear waste

When the total volume control on toxicity for nuclear waste management is applied, it becomes a limiting factor for the permittable total operation capacity of nuclear reactors. An alternative conceptual scenario to achieve the control is proposed that aims at toxicity reduction through Partitioning and Transmutation (P&T). Specifically, the electricity generation capacity could be inversely increased up with transmutation of $$^{90}$$Sr-$$^{137}$$Cs. Simultaneously, the cooling time before disposal is reduced to 50 years from the 300 years required by the existing scenarios such as (Accelerator Driven System (ADS). Finally, the scenario is also found feasible in terms of energy balance and cost by the neutron source of Li(d,xn) reaction with the deuteron accelerator for transmutation.

Electrochemical recovery of Zr and Cd from molten chloride salts for reprocessing of used nitride fuels

Excess amounts of dissolution agents, CdCl$$_2$$ and ZrCl$$_4$$, are required to dissolve transuranium (TRU: Pu and minor actinides) nitrides into LiCl-KCl melts at the chemical dissolution step, which is the first step in the reprocessing of used nitride fuels. We propose an electrochemical process where the remaining Zr and Cd are recovered from the melts to be recycled as dissolution agents for the chemical dissolution step, leaving TRU in the melts. Since the initial concentration ratio of CdCl$$_2$$/ZrCl$$_4$$ remaining in the melts would depend on the condition of the chemical dissolution step and would vary during the proposed electrochemical recovery process, electrochemical behaviors of Zr and Cd were investigated in LiCl-KCl melts with various concentration ratios of CdCl$$_2$$/ZrCl$$_4$$ at 723 K to confirm the basic feasibility of the proposed process. Potentiostatic electrolysis was performed using a liquid Cd cathode at -1.05 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), which was a more positive potential than the redox potentials of TRU on the liquid Cd electrode. The obtained results showed that the current efficiency for recovering Zr and Cd from the melts was as high as 100% regardless of the CdCl$$_2$$/ZrCl$$_4$$ concentration ratio in the melts.

Lead bismuth target for Accelerator-driven Transmutation System (ADS)

Lead bismuth eutectic alloy (LBE) is a promising option as a spallation target for accelerator-driven transmutation systems (ADS) to reduce the radiological toxicity from long-lived radioactive waste. LBE is a heavy metal and has suitable characteristics both as a spallation target and as a coolant for transmutation systems. However, LBE is also known as a highly corrosive with structural materials. In this paper, technological developments to overcome the issue, the latest research activities such as hightemperature operation and oxygen concentration control to ensure corrosion resistance, are introduced together with the outline of the target for ADS.

Density functional study on Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity using crown ether type ligands

Density functional theory calculations were applied to understand the selectivity between Am$$^{3+}$$ and Eu$$^{3+}$$ ions with the crown ethers type ligands. 18C6 is predicted to form the most stable complex with Eu$$^{3+}$$ and show the higher stability for Am$$^{3+}$$ over Eu$$^{3+}$$, being consistent with previously reported Am$$^{3+}$$/Eu$$^{3+}$$ selectivity. We modeled N- and S-donor complexes by using framework of 18C6 complex and analyzed the complexation Gibbs energies, indicating that 18C6 with N-donor atoms is suitable for both complexation and higher Am$$^{3+}$$ stability over Eu$$^{3+}$$ due to the stronger covalent interaction.
